Road Cleaning in Sheffield

Street Cleaning Services in Sheffield

Sheffield is a busy City in South Yorkshire that requires regular cleaning of its roads and streets. This is a task that is carried out by the local council along with its appointed sub contractors where necessary.

The roads are cleaned using different methods and also items of equipment, depending on the scope of works and where the actual street cleaning is needed.

Small areas may be cleaned by manual workers using just brooms and handtools, larger areas and highways will usually be cleaned by specialist road sweeper trucks and compact precinct type sweepers.

Road Cleaning In Sheffield

This is especially the case in Autumn months when the many trees start to drop their leafs, in what is commonly known as the leafing season. In Autumn the thousands of roads in Sheffield can become a hazard and also unsightly if the leaves are not swept and sucked up, and this is just one job that a road sweeper vehicle can handle.

A road sweeping truck can carry out road cleaning by spraying large volumes of water onto the highways surface, this is then scrubbed by the sweeper trucks several brushes in readiness for sucking up afterwards.

A powerful vacuum suction box fitted to the road sweeper truck sucks up the dirty water and any solid waste items, depositing it in the trucks hopper unit for later disposal of.

Often certain roads can be soiled heavily after ground works has taken place such as when utility companies dig the road up to carry out essential repairs and maintenance. This includes the water mains, gas supply pipes, and electrical service cables.

If the roads are very dirty and soiled one option is to jet wash the particular area, another would be to use a Beam Sweeper. This is a specialist vehicle that uses high pressure jets of water to blast the roads surface removing stubborn dirt and grime.

The beam sweeper is a specialist vehicle that is usually obtained as and when from companies that provide the rental of gully tankers and road sweepers.

Cleaning Spillages Up

Spillages can occur on the streets in Sheffield because of several reasons, it could be because of a delivery lorry that has shed some of its load, because a car, van or lorry has suffered a leak, or because of a road traffic accident.

When this happens the local authorities and their contracts come into play cleaning up the spillage with all the resources that they have available including sand, oil spillage kits, street cleaners, and road sweeping vehicles.

Machinery Moving Equipment Hire Sheffield

Machinery Moving Equipment Hire Sheffield

When it comes to the engineering task of machinery moving it is important to choose and use the right equipment and tools for the job.

Whilst small items of equipment, plant, and machinery may only need some basis items and tools, large bulky items and heavy pieces of factory machinery will need specialist equipment such as machinery moving skates, heavy duty lifting jacks, maybe one or more cranes, hi-ab units, and so on.

Even just the job of loading and unloading machinery can dictate that specialist equipment is needed, especially when loading on and off transportation vehicles.

Pre-planning is essential when carrying out this type of work and in choosing the right type and quantity of equipment needed. In nearly all cases it is best to have an excess quantity of equipment to-hand in case the need arises whilst the job is underway.

Machinery Moving

Machinery Removals

Machine removals, the transportation, and relocation of machinery is a skilled aspect of this type of engineering work. To remain efficient and work in a safe and productive way requires the use of skilled staff, the right equipment, and the right transportation vehicles and cranes.

With factory machinery sometimes not having any lifting points it is important that only skilled operatives and related skilled mechanical engineering staff carry out this type of work.

By related staff we are referring to industrial electricians and experienced mechanical fitters.

Factory Relocations

A great number of businesses and companies in all parts of the UK including those in Chesterfield, Dronfield, Doncaster, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Rotherham, and Sheffield from time to time undergo a factory relocation. This could be involving a single item of machinery, several machines, up to a production line or a complete factory relocation.

Where this is required multiple items of equipment and plant is usually required including the likes of fork lift trucks, versa-lifts, tele-handlers, lorries, as well as several sets of moving skates etc.

Factory relocation projects require careful management and planning to ensure the job goes ahead on time, and in a cost effective and safe way.

Today there are models available that are designed for one man operation, these are usually machines that are fitted with a light weight two stroke petrol engine. They also normally have an enclosed handle arrangement to provide good ergonomic control for the person that is using it.

The auger bit that fits onto the hole borer fits by way of a screw thread, if you use one of these items of garden machinery on a regular basis its worth protecting the attachment thread to prevent any corrosion taking place due to the wet environment that hole borers are constantly used in.

Two man machines are also available from some tool rental suppliers, these depending on the brand of the machine could be fitted with a two stroke or a larger four stroke engine. One machine to list as an example is the heavy duty and high quality Stihl BT360 model.

Pipe Freezer Hire

Pipe Freezer Tool Hire

Pipe freezer hire

A pipe freezer is the ideal tool for helping you with repairs and modification to your domestic or commercial plumbing system.

One of these items of plumbing equipment allows you to freeze a section of (cold water) pipe work to allow you to isolate the system for carrying out repairs, modifications, and any other necessary work that is needed.

Need to change a radiator valve or fix a leaking pipe? Instead of draining-down the complete central heating system just hire a pipe freezer and save hours of labour time!

A pipe freezer is really easy to set-up and use, once the clamps have been fitted to the flow and return pipes it just needs plugging into a nearby mains socket and you can take it from there. In a short time "plugs" of frozen water will develop in the pipes allowing you to get to work on the job in-hand!

Depending on the size of the water pipes and the temperature of the water (as well as conductivity) the time it takes to pipe freeze can be in the range of 5 minutes up to 60 minutes as a guide line. For most domestic systems as long as the water in the central heating system is cold in practice the pipes are frozen in around 15 to 20 minutes.

Pipe Freezing Kit Hire

This item of plumbing equipment is one that can save hours of time when carrying out all types of plumbing work, from the job of changing a simple tap washer, plumbing in a washing machine or a dishwasher through to changing components and items in your central heating system.

This could be the removal and re-fitting of a new central heating system radiator, the water pump, or even the main boiler, using pipe freezer kit hire really does transform the way you do plumbing and can transform the way you have worked before.

Who uses pipe freezing kits?

A freezing kit is commonly used by two types of users, these being professional plumbers and also DIY users that are confident in carrying out domestic plumbing jobs around their homes.

For anyone that is contemplating working on the central heating system or water supply and drainage pipework in a property, a pipe freezer kit is one of the most useful tool items to have available.

They can be used in commercial properties as well as domestic properties including apartments, flats, houses, out-buildings, offices, factories, warehouses, garages, shops and shopping centres, supermarkets, and every type of building or property where there is water pipework inplace.

Frequently asked questions

Are there different types of pipe freezers?

There are three (3) different types of pipe freezers that can be found throughout the UK. These are bottled gas operated pipe freezers that use liquid gas to freeze pipes, pipe freezers that are in the form of a disposable can of pipe freezing spray (as can be purchased from plumbers merchants and DIY shops such as B and Q, Wickes, and the likes of Screwfix and Toolstation) and also the electric pipe freezer kits that are provided by most specialist tool hire shops (as being described in this feature).

What is pipe freeze?

Pipe freeze refers to the process in which a small ice plug is formed within a section of piping. The frozen plug can withstand the water pressure long enough to allow a plumber or DIY user enough time to carry out a repair, perform essential maintenance, fit a new component, or the installation of a service valve or pipe cap.

What is the best type of pipe freezer to hire?

Most specialist tool hire shops only hire the electric type of pipe freezer, this is because it is the most popular and versatile type that is used throughout the UK. It is also the easiest to use on both commercial as well as domestic properties.

What voltage do electric pipe freezer kits operate on?

Although 240v units are available it is common practice for most tool hire shops to supply units that run off a 110v electric supply. This is because a lot of "trade users" and businesses dictate these models over 240v powered ones.

Either way it is not an issue as both can be used in all types of properties where needed, your tool hire shop will also provide a suitable transformer to step-down the voltage from 240v to 110v when required in domestic properties.

** Tip:- ensure you obtain an extension lead if you intend to site the transformer a distance away where you need to use and site the pipe freezer kit.

Is a freezing jacket needed when using one of these plumbing tools?

No, a pipe freezing jacket is not required, the unit is supplied with clamps that attach on to each section of the pipe that needs isolating. The unit is efficient and powerful so no insulating jacket is needed.

How long does the freeze last?

After disconnection of the tool (or when it is turned off) the ice plug will start to melt, this usually takes around 10 to 30 minutes depending on the diameter size of the pipe and the length of the ice plug that has formed within it. To keep the plugs frozen simply leave the freezer connected and switched on.

Can this equipment freeze moving water?

No, whilst one of these products will usually freeze water that is just a drip or a light trickle it is designed to be used with water that is not flowing. In commercial and industrial applications moving water can be frozen to a certain degree but only by the use of liquid nitrogen that is handled and processed by specialist cryogenic freezing contractors.

Can warm or hot water be frozen?

Pipe freezer kit hire is aimed at DIY users and plumbers for the freezing of cold water. Warm water can be frozen but the time taken for the ice plug to form will be far longer than if it was cold. Hot water should be left to cool down to a temperature where the freezemaster unit can be used.

Can old lead pipes be frozen?

Yes, lead plumbing pipes can be frozen but it may take a little longer than modern copper pipes.

Will the ice plugs stand up to mains water pressure?

Yes, the freezemaster unit can cope with the water pressure that the mains water supply delivers water to the property.

Can the equipment be used on microbore copper pipes?

Yes, just ensure that when you arrange the hire of a pipe freezer that you specify you need to use it on microbore pipes. In this plumbing application you will need the smallest size of clamps and will usually need to wrap tissue around the clamp area too.

Can a pipe freezer be used whilst a central heating pump is running?

No, the pump needs to be switched off so the water in the system is not flowing.

Should I turn off the boiler when using a freezer?

Yes, the water in the pipe(s) needs to be as cold as possible so the boiler needs to be switched off.

Can I use a blowlamp or a heatgun near to where the ice plug has been formed?

No, any heat source in the area needs to be avoided unless you temporarily cap-off the pipe(s). If heat is applied near to the plugged area the ice plug will melt allowing free flowing of the water within the pipes.

Is there a way of insulating the water plug from defrosting?

If you leave the electric pipe freezer connected and switched-on this won't be needed, if you have removed the clamps then you can insulate the plugged area by wrapping dry towels around the frozen pipe, this will slow down the thawing action.

Can this equipment be used if the pipes are situated close to a wall?

Yes, if tissue paper is wrapped around the pipe(s) and saturated with water the clamps can be freeze-welded to the pipe on the front side allowing the machine to do its work.

How long does the pipe stay frozen?

The pipe will stay frozen all the time that the machine is connected and switched-on.

As long as the electric power supply is not turned-off the section of pipe chosen will remain frozen.

This allows you or your plumbing contractor the required time to carry out a repair, remove a fitting or appliance, nip to the van or down to the local plumbers merchant for a fitting or some spare parts, maybe match up a new trv valve or gate valve, then return back to the property or job site to finish the job with no drain down of the system needed.

Can the pipe be quickly defrosted when the necessary work is completed?

Yes, it can be quickly defrosted by using just a little warmth. Some plumbers and heating contractors use an old hair dryer on a low heat setting, or by directing some gentle heat from a blowlamp or a soldering torch.

Can the equipment be used on deformed pipes?

In most cases one of these items of plumbing equipment can be used on pipes that are misshaped or deformed, providing they are not extreme. The nearest size of clamps should be used with or without reducers and then the void packed with wet tissue paper. This will allow the pipe freezing process to take place.

Where to obtain mag drill hire from in Sheffield

Mag Drill Hire Sheffield

If you need to obtain the temporary hire of a mag drill in Sheffield we can help you by steering you in the right direction to a local tool hire shop that provides the hire of these types of engineering tools.

You can hire a mag drill in Sheffield from Turner Hire

Telephone: 0114 2581682

One of these electric operated drills is used in several industries including those involved with steel fabrication, steel component assembly and steel erection, and in tasks associated with engineering maintenance and engineering repair work.

A mag drill is basically an electric power tool that comprises of an electric metal drilling pillar drill that is mounted on a heavy duty and strong electromagnetic base assembly.

The magnetic base allows the mag drill to be attached to steel components that requires one or more holes drilling through them. By holding the drill using magnetism to the steel it allows holes of varing sizes to be drilled in a really accurate way.

Mag Drills can be commonly seen in the workplace being used by steel erectors, engineers, mechanical fitters, and staff including metal fabricators drilling into steel rsj's, steel box sections, thick steel bars, pipes, beams, and other metal components.

A portable mag drill is also used in the UK automotive industries for drilling holes in vehicle and trailer chassis sections, especially by companies that manufacture custom trailer units, horse boxes, catering trailers, and commercial vehicles.

Mag Drills provide a solution to drilling steel on the work site

If you can't take the steel work to the fabrication shop - take the drill to the site instead!

One of the main advantages in using a portable mag drill is the ability to take it to the work site for onsite drilling when the need arises. If the steel item that need drilling cannot be moved the only option is to drill it whilst it is in situ. The hire and use of a mag drill allows you to do this.

Cutters used in magnetic drills

Mag drills can commonly use several types of cutters and drill bits depending on their design and whether fitted with a traditional chuck or spindle arbor. For the drilling of "traditional" holes in steel a mag drill with a conventional chuck can use standard hss or cobalt drill bits, alike to being used in a pistol type electric drill.

For large diameter holes the mag drill may be one that uses "morse taper" bits. Most mag drills however use cutters that are called "annular cutters" - these are cutters that are also sometimes referred to as being core bits.

An annular cutter is a hollow type of drill bit that cuts metal by way of an annular groove at the periphery of the hole, leaving a solid core (or slug) of metal that is ejected from the bit afterwards.

This type of cutter drills holes faster, easier, and in a more accurate way than conventional twist drill bits.

Annular mag drill cutters work in the same way as concrete drilling core bits, but of course are used for metal drilling. These types of cutters are usually manufactured from either high speed steel or feature a high speed steel body manufactured with strong tungsten carbide tips.

Another point worthy of a mention is that these mag drill cutters are designed to be used at a far lower drilling speed than a traditional twist drilling bit, hence the reason why mag drills rotate at a lower rpm than a portable pistol type drilling tool.

Weldon shank type cutters are the most popular type of drill cutters that are used in a mag drill. This type of annular cutter has two shanks (flats) on the bit on which grub screws tighten up on to fasten securely into a mag drills spindle.

Choosing the right mag drill

It is important to choose a mag drill that suits your needs when it comes to you hiring one of these power tools, the same applies if alternatively you are looking to buy a mag drill.

For purely drilling holes there are two main considerations; being the diameter size of the holes that you wish to drill as well as the budget that you are prepared to spend. Most mag drills that you can obtain from a tool hire shop will usually handle boring a hole size in metal of up to around 30 / 32mm in diameter.

A few tool hire shops that specialise in a range of engineering related tools should also be able to supply mag drills that can cope with much larger sizes, usually in the range of around 75mm to 100mm capacity.

It therefore makes a lot of sense when searching for mag drill hire sheffield to know exactly what size diameter holes you will be drilling, in order to obtain the right tool for the job.

Electrical supply needed

With most portable magnetic drilling tools being used on construction and fabrication sites it is no surprise to see that the majority of units hired and used in Sheffield are of the 110v type. Although 240v models are available 99.9% of mag drills used in Sheffield as well as throughout the rest of the UK are 110 volt.

Because of this a mains transformer is needed to provide the electric supply whilst being used on-site. A suitable transformer would be one that is usually around a rating of 3.0kva or 3.3kva such as those distributed in the UK by Birchwood Price Tool Sales and carrying the brand name of "Defender".

If using one of these tools on a site that has no power supply you could also use a suitable portable generator along the likes of a medium sized one from brands like "Harringtons" "Honda" "Pramac" or "Stephill".

A suitable extension cable / lead will also be required when using a transformer to power a mag drill, with most fabrication and construction workers favouring a 14m loose extension lead.

How to cultivate your garden

Prepare the soil in your Sheffield garden with a Rotavator or petrol Tiller machine

Prepare the soil in your Sheffield garden with a rotavator

Good fertile soil is the key to any garden project, Plants including flowers and vegetables need fertile soil that is loose, water drainable, and rich in nutrients.

If you can achieve this at your garden or allotment in Sheffield you will be allowing your plants to have good root growth with a strong yield of crops.

In order to start the successful planting of vegetables, fruit, and flowers you can prepare the soil by way of using a tiller or a rotavator machine.

Rotavators and Tillers

Both of these types of machines are able to help with preparing the soil at your Sheffield allotment or home. They both dig into the soil and turn it over allowing it to become aerated, loose, and creating an environment for plants to develop afterwards.

Having good soil is essential for the growing of healthy and productive plants and having the use of a petrol rotavator or tiller can save you hours of otherwise manual labour to achieve this.

Do you need a rotavator or a tiller?

Apart from the physical size and weight difference between most tillers and rotavators (rotavators are usually quite heavy and bulky in size when compared to a tiller) there are some clear differences that may help you to choose which of these machines you need to prepare the soil in your garden or at your allotment.

A rotavator is chosen for work in large areas and especially on soil where a new planting bed is being created. They are usually driven by wheels and have large cutting blades that turn over compacted soil.

As already mentioned petrol engined rotavators are usually far larger in size than a tiller machine, they are also considerably heavier.

Note: If you are considering to buy or hire a rotavator ensure you consider a tiller first!

In most cases a tiller machine is what private (non trade) users really need, and especially on allotments and gardens that have existing flower borders and planting areas!

A tiller is an item of garden machinery that is usually far smaller in physical size than a rotavator, they are also lighter in-weight making them more manageable, and of course this plays a large part if you need to transport such a machine from your home to maybe your Sheffield allotment.

A tiller will work best on ground that has previously been used for the growing of plants (vegetables fruit, or flowers) and for dedicated borders and cultivation plots.

The soil on your growing plot needs to be moist for a tiller machine to work best, it doesn't want to be wet or waterlogged, and at the same time it mustn't be rock hard.

A good idea is to test the soil in your Sheffield garden or allotment before starting to use a petrol tiller, to check for if water can permeate it as well as it's ph level. If the soil is too wet consider adding grit and sand, or maybe gypsum, this will help the break-up of the soil and allow nutrients and moisture to move within it.

When to use a tiller or rotavator

The soil in your garden or allotment plot should be semi-dry, so if it has rained wait a day or two for the soil to dry-out a little.

Having a little moisture will make the ground easier to turn-over and be broke up.

If the soil is too wet it will just "clump up" and dry out into hard lumps that will be difficult to cultivate.

As far as the best time of year to till or rotavate usually spring or towards the end of summer is best, so for the areas of Sheffield (as well as nearby Bakewell, Chesterfield, Dinnington, Dronfield, Hathersage, Hope, Staveley, and Worksop) this includes March though to the end of May as well as towards the end of August through to October.

Where to obtain rotavator hire in Sheffield from?

Concrete Breaker Hire Sheffield

Low Priced Concrete Breaker Tools

Local Concrete Breaker Tool Hire Sheffield

When you need to hire a concrete breaker tool in Sheffield for breaking-up some brickwork, stone walling, or maybe a section of concrete flooring, you don't need to look any further than your local tool hire shop.

To hire one of these power tools we recommend:-

Turner Hire Sheffield

London Road
Sheffield
S2 4ND

Telephone 0114 2581682

Available for as little a hire period as one day upwards hiring a breaker is really easy and straight forward to arrange.

For light to medium duty work such as knocking old bricks and mortar off a buildings wall or a structure above ground level height, you should look at renting a light or medium duty rated concrete breaker tool.

Either of these types of tool can be fitted with a choice of breaker chisels including pointed chisels, blade type, or spade type chisels.

Light to medium concrete breaker tools are usually powered by electric operating off a domestic 240v power supply or (more usually) are 110v being run off a suitable transformer to step-down the voltage from 240v accordingly.

They can also be powered by a petrol or diesel portable generator for use on sites and Sheffield locations where there is no readily available power source.

How Effective is a Concrete Breaker Tool ?

Compared to manually hammering and breaking up / down masonry structures and walls with a sledge hammer or a lump hammer with a bolster chisel - an electric demolition / concrete breaker tool is really effective.

As well as being relatively fast to use one of these power tools really takes the hard effort out when tackling the removal of wall bricks, and small areas of concrete.

Need to break up some asphalt, an old concrete shed base, garage base, or some concrete that is part of a floor? If you need to tackle any of these then you need a high powered demolition breaker tool such as a Bosch GSH27 or similar.

These tools are designed to be used at floor level and are totally unsuitable for use at heights and if working on alloy scaffold towers, ladders, or on a item of powered access equipment.

Chisels for a Concrete Breaker

To handle demolition jobs both on the building site or at your Sheffield home you need at least one suitable chisel to use with this type of tool.

Breaker chisels are available that are flat, pointed, or which have a wide spade type head.

Flat headed chisels are often referred to as a small, medium, or wide chisel - chosen dependant on the job that it need to be used for. Most of these chisel bits are manufactured from hard forged steel in order to cope with the pounding they receive when hammering concrete and stone.

When opting to hire a concrete breaker tool your tool hire shop will usually offer various types of chisel bits for you to use with your hired tool.

Some companies charge a small rental or wear charge for these accessories, some sell them as an essential add-on, and some offer the free of charge purely for goodwill!

Brands of Concrete Breaker Tool

When searching for concrete breaker hire in Sheffield your local tool hire shop will probably have one or more trade brands of concrete breaker tools that they keep in-stock, and have on their own tool rental fleet.

For heavy duty work (as carried out by local trades including Sheffield builders, plasterers, roofing contractors, civil engineers, electricians, plumbers, and landscapers etc) a professional brand of concrete breaker tool is essential.

A DIY make of concrete breaker will just not stand-up to the tough prolonged periods of use that a tradesperson will need to put it too!

Professional trade brands of this type of power tool are also manufactured to a higher quality level as well as being tougher, more robust, and offering more performance especially when being regularly used.

Examples of professional brands of electric concrete breakers include Bosch, Dewalt, Hitachi, Kango, Makita, and Milwaukee to mention a few.
