A girder trolley is used in the same way as a traditional girder clamp. The difference being is that is can be moved along the length of the lifting beam that is being used, allowing a way of moving equipment or machinery that is suspended from it.

Some girder trolley units are of a "quick mount" type, having a quick-release catch that allows the user to quickly mount and un-mount the trolley when required from the beam / gantry / rsj that it is mounted on. 

Others have a fixed-bolt type fastening method, and a third type has a threaded retaining bar that is used to tighten and clamp the trolley unit on to the beam.

The latter type are commonly fitted to large capacity girder trolley such as 300mm width size ones.
