Pipe Freezer Hire

Pipe Freezer Tool Hire

Pipe freezer hire

A pipe freezer is the ideal tool for helping you with repairs and modification to your domestic or commercial plumbing system.

One of these items of plumbing equipment allows you to freeze a section of (cold water) pipe work to allow you to isolate the system for carrying out repairs, modifications, and any other necessary work that is needed.

Need to change a radiator valve or fix a leaking pipe? Instead of draining-down the complete central heating system just hire a pipe freezer and save hours of labour time!

A pipe freezer is really easy to set-up and use, once the clamps have been fitted to the flow and return pipes it just needs plugging into a nearby mains socket and you can take it from there. In a short time "plugs" of frozen water will develop in the pipes allowing you to get to work on the job in-hand!

Depending on the size of the water pipes and the temperature of the water (as well as conductivity) the time it takes to pipe freeze can be in the range of 5 minutes up to 60 minutes as a guide line. For most domestic systems as long as the water in the central heating system is cold in practice the pipes are frozen in around 15 to 20 minutes.

Pipe Freezing Kit Hire

This item of plumbing equipment is one that can save hours of time when carrying out all types of plumbing work, from the job of changing a simple tap washer, plumbing in a washing machine or a dishwasher through to changing components and items in your central heating system.

This could be the removal and re-fitting of a new central heating system radiator, the water pump, or even the main boiler, using pipe freezer kit hire really does transform the way you do plumbing and can transform the way you have worked before.

Who uses pipe freezing kits?

A freezing kit is commonly used by two types of users, these being professional plumbers and also DIY users that are confident in carrying out domestic plumbing jobs around their homes.

For anyone that is contemplating working on the central heating system or water supply and drainage pipework in a property, a pipe freezer kit is one of the most useful tool items to have available.

They can be used in commercial properties as well as domestic properties including apartments, flats, houses, out-buildings, offices, factories, warehouses, garages, shops and shopping centres, supermarkets, and every type of building or property where there is water pipework inplace.

Frequently asked questions

Are there different types of pipe freezers?

There are three (3) different types of pipe freezers that can be found throughout the UK. These are bottled gas operated pipe freezers that use liquid gas to freeze pipes, pipe freezers that are in the form of a disposable can of pipe freezing spray (as can be purchased from plumbers merchants and DIY shops such as B and Q, Wickes, and the likes of Screwfix and Toolstation) and also the electric pipe freezer kits that are provided by most specialist tool hire shops (as being described in this feature).

What is pipe freeze?

Pipe freeze refers to the process in which a small ice plug is formed within a section of piping. The frozen plug can withstand the water pressure long enough to allow a plumber or DIY user enough time to carry out a repair, perform essential maintenance, fit a new component, or the installation of a service valve or pipe cap.

What is the best type of pipe freezer to hire?

Most specialist tool hire shops only hire the electric type of pipe freezer, this is because it is the most popular and versatile type that is used throughout the UK. It is also the easiest to use on both commercial as well as domestic properties.

What voltage do electric pipe freezer kits operate on?

Although 240v units are available it is common practice for most tool hire shops to supply units that run off a 110v electric supply. This is because a lot of "trade users" and businesses dictate these models over 240v powered ones.

Either way it is not an issue as both can be used in all types of properties where needed, your tool hire shop will also provide a suitable transformer to step-down the voltage from 240v to 110v when required in domestic properties.

** Tip:- ensure you obtain an extension lead if you intend to site the transformer a distance away where you need to use and site the pipe freezer kit.

Is a freezing jacket needed when using one of these plumbing tools?

No, a pipe freezing jacket is not required, the unit is supplied with clamps that attach on to each section of the pipe that needs isolating. The unit is efficient and powerful so no insulating jacket is needed.

How long does the freeze last?

After disconnection of the tool (or when it is turned off) the ice plug will start to melt, this usually takes around 10 to 30 minutes depending on the diameter size of the pipe and the length of the ice plug that has formed within it. To keep the plugs frozen simply leave the freezer connected and switched on.

Can this equipment freeze moving water?

No, whilst one of these products will usually freeze water that is just a drip or a light trickle it is designed to be used with water that is not flowing. In commercial and industrial applications moving water can be frozen to a certain degree but only by the use of liquid nitrogen that is handled and processed by specialist cryogenic freezing contractors.

Can warm or hot water be frozen?

Pipe freezer kit hire is aimed at DIY users and plumbers for the freezing of cold water. Warm water can be frozen but the time taken for the ice plug to form will be far longer than if it was cold. Hot water should be left to cool down to a temperature where the freezemaster unit can be used.

Can old lead pipes be frozen?

Yes, lead plumbing pipes can be frozen but it may take a little longer than modern copper pipes.

Will the ice plugs stand up to mains water pressure?

Yes, the freezemaster unit can cope with the water pressure that the mains water supply delivers water to the property.

Can the equipment be used on microbore copper pipes?

Yes, just ensure that when you arrange the hire of a pipe freezer that you specify you need to use it on microbore pipes. In this plumbing application you will need the smallest size of clamps and will usually need to wrap tissue around the clamp area too.

Can a pipe freezer be used whilst a central heating pump is running?

No, the pump needs to be switched off so the water in the system is not flowing.

Should I turn off the boiler when using a freezer?

Yes, the water in the pipe(s) needs to be as cold as possible so the boiler needs to be switched off.

Can I use a blowlamp or a heatgun near to where the ice plug has been formed?

No, any heat source in the area needs to be avoided unless you temporarily cap-off the pipe(s). If heat is applied near to the plugged area the ice plug will melt allowing free flowing of the water within the pipes.

Is there a way of insulating the water plug from defrosting?

If you leave the electric pipe freezer connected and switched-on this won't be needed, if you have removed the clamps then you can insulate the plugged area by wrapping dry towels around the frozen pipe, this will slow down the thawing action.

Can this equipment be used if the pipes are situated close to a wall?

Yes, if tissue paper is wrapped around the pipe(s) and saturated with water the clamps can be freeze-welded to the pipe on the front side allowing the machine to do its work.

How long does the pipe stay frozen?

The pipe will stay frozen all the time that the machine is connected and switched-on.

As long as the electric power supply is not turned-off the section of pipe chosen will remain frozen.

This allows you or your plumbing contractor the required time to carry out a repair, remove a fitting or appliance, nip to the van or down to the local plumbers merchant for a fitting or some spare parts, maybe match up a new trv valve or gate valve, then return back to the property or job site to finish the job with no drain down of the system needed.

Can the pipe be quickly defrosted when the necessary work is completed?

Yes, it can be quickly defrosted by using just a little warmth. Some plumbers and heating contractors use an old hair dryer on a low heat setting, or by directing some gentle heat from a blowlamp or a soldering torch.

Can the equipment be used on deformed pipes?

In most cases one of these items of plumbing equipment can be used on pipes that are misshaped or deformed, providing they are not extreme. The nearest size of clamps should be used with or without reducers and then the void packed with wet tissue paper. This will allow the pipe freezing process to take place.
