Popular areas of industry where a welder is often used is in the industrial sectors around building and construction work, engineering and metal fabrication, general metal component manufacturing and assembly work, machinery maintenance and repairs, aerospace, the construction, assembly, and manufacturing of pipelines and pressure vessels, and in shipbuilding.

Electric powered welding equipment

There are a wide range of different types of electric welding equipment that you can hire, these are chosen to suit the type of welding work that is needed as well as the site environment. Types of electric welders that are freely available to hire include arc, mig, tig, and mma welders to name a few.

Mig welders

An electric mig welder can really make those difficult metal repair jobs that much easier. They are regularly used by engineering staff and vehicle mechanics whether being put to use in a workshop, in a garage, in a factory environment, or on the farm.

An electric powered mig welder works by using an arc of electricity to create a short-circuit between the metal that is being welded and a continuously fed length of welding wire. The heat that is produced by the short-circuit melts the metal allowing them to mix together, once the heat source is removed the result is a new piece of fused metal.

The use of gas when mig welding

When welding with a mig welder you need to shield the "weld pool" with a gas, the "weld pool" needs to be protected from oxygen - hence the need to replace this air with gas!

With a mig welder you have 2 options when it comes to this task; one option is to use a "gas" mig welder with an appropriate bottle of welding gas, the second option is to use what is commonly referred to as a "gasless" mig welder. These "shield" the weld pool in a different way, a gasless mig welder uses a spool of welding wire that incorporates a flux core, as you use the welder and carry out the welding process the arc melts the wire and at the same time burns the flux core within, this produces a gas shield around the welding process and on the area of the metal item that is being welded.

Arc welding

Arc welding is also commonly referred to as stick welding, it is one of the oldest forms of electric welding as far as the history of welding goes! An electric arc welder uses a welding rod (the stick) that is coated with flux, when the arc is struck between the work piece and the welding rod the rod and flux melt, the flux creates a gas shield around the weld-pool preventing oxidisation occurring, and the two metals are then joined by the filler rod.

The "arc" that is created with a portable welder of this type is quite fierce and is more suited for thicker gauge steels. Arc welding is commonly used in commercial applications such as the repairing of agricultural machinery, heavy steel engineering and fabrication, and the assembly of steel structures and items such as heavy duty metal fencing and entrance gates.

Tig welding

Tig welding is another form of welding that uses an arc. This type of welding is one that can produce a very high quality weld compared to other methods.

The process of tig welding is one that requires the welder to use both hands, one hand is used for holding the tig welders torch (this produces the arc), the other hand is used to hold the filler rod to add the filler metal to the weld joint. Because two hands are needed to carry out this welding process it can be very time consuming, but at the same time it is a very versatile way of welding. It can be used to weld a wide choice of different metals.

An electric powered tig welder is commonly used for the welding onsite (and also in the fabrication shop) of critical weld joints, welding metal other than just mild steel. It is also a great way of welding where precise and small welds are needed.
